Magnolia began humbly as a timber town in the 1840s and has developed into a full-grown sprawling center of commerce. Originally it was named Mink’s Prairie after an early settler, Joseph Mink. By 1903, I &GN Railroad came to town and the name was changed to Magnolia. This new mode of transportation brought a steady stream of new residents which meant new housing, churches, and commercial businesses. Today the old train depot has been restored on its original site and serves as a Texas landmark to greet visitors. Climate The climate during summer months in Magnolia is hot with average temperatures in 80s, though the daytime temps can reach the mid to upper-90s, especially in July. During January, temperatures may fall to near freezing for only a very few days. The annual average precipitation for Magnolia is 48 inches and is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year. The Texas Opry entertains sold-out audiences with vocal and musical entertainers as well as side-splitting comedy acts and the best cloggers in the Lone Start State. In addition to the entertainment, The Texas Opry Café offers home-style meals just prior to the shows. This is a family-oriented venue so there’s “no cussin’ allowed”. Local shopping includes quaint shops and a new Westwood Village which features retail stores like Target, TJ Maxx, and several favorite well-known eateries. Magnolia’s close proximity to Houston and The Woodlands offers many venues and endless activities for its visitors and residents. Schools During the early days of what was then called Mink, a school was established to educate the community’s children. By 1896 there were four schools within a five-mile radius. The schools consolidated in 1901 and by 1911, the first high school was constructed. Rapid growth has contributed to increased enrollment and further expansion to the district. Today, the Magnolia Independent School District is one of the fastest growing districts, growing steadily at 7 to 10 percent, and recent enrollment exceeded 8,000 students. The school district stretches over 147 square miles and is second in the state as far as growth. Academic programs have proven successful, with two campuses receiving “Exemplary” ratings and one receiving “Recognized” rating. One of the reasons for the district’s success lies with its strong community support.
