Conroe is the closest city to the many outstanding neighborhoods on and around Lake Conroe. The Lake Conroe area is located 40 miles north of Houston on I-45, just below the Sam Houston National Forest. The downtown business district of Conroe began to develop in the 1880s. The post office was established in 1884. The lumber industry boomed with the help of the International-Great Northern Railroad. Over the next few years Conroe began to establish itself, becoming the County Seat of Montgomery County in 1889. By 1892 the city had become a shipping center for lumber, cotton, livestock and bricks. Conroe continued to grow and flourish and was incorporated in 1904. The next three decades would see hard times fall upon Conroe, until the discovery of oil.
During the oil boom, the town increased in revenues and in population. The Crighton Theatre, where Elvis Presley performed some 15 years, later was erected A new courthouse was also constructed, and these structures serve today as a testament to the town’s early prosperous history.
In 2006, Conroe accounted for about 45,000 of the population of the metro area but over the next three years, building permits for residences doubled. It is now a booming Houston suburb.
Climate
The average high temperature is 78 degrees and the average low temperature is 57. There are several days in the summer where the high will be in the mid-90s and some nights in the winter that will be in the low 40s. Average annual rainfall is about 50 inches per year, but there is no appreciable snowfall. There are 205 sunny days per year in the area, which makes Lake Conroe an excellent place for outdoor recreation.
Things to Do
The area’s interesting and diverse history is recorded and available for exploring at the Heritage Museum and N.H. Davis Pioneer Museum. Live performances are offered at Owen Theater, the Crighton Theatre, and Heritage Place Outdoor Theater.
Nearby Lake Conroe offers a park and pavilion with tables and grills, playgrounds, volleyball courts, fishing piers, swimming, boating, canoeing, kayaking, and skiing. The Southern Empress, a Victorian paddleboat, offers an elegant setting for Sunday Brunch, or special occasions like a birthday, wedding, or corporate banquet.
Jones State Forest or Sam Houston National Forest allow visitors to bird-watch, or just enjoy nature on many trails. Golfers can choose to tee-off on several courses, but the Wedgewood Golf Course is set within a rolling, luscious pine forest and features ponds and whispering waterfalls. It is a challenging but playable course for all levels of play.
Shoppers will love browsing for special pieces at many antique shops and unique gift shops, one-of-a-kind items at arts and craft stores or searching for deep discounts at the Outlets at Conroe.
And, of course, the delights of the city of Houston are just a short drive away.
Schools
Almost all of Conroe lies within the Conroe Independent School District (CISD), except for a small northern section of Conroe which lies within the Willis Independent School District (WISD).
CISD has one high school, 2 junior high schools, two intermediate schools, and seven elementary schools. The District's mission emphasizes establishing performance standards that are useful in the real world. The District focuses on quality instruction, operations and leadership.
The WISD has one high school, one middle school, and one elementary school. The District challenges their students to grow academically, socially, physically and emotionally. The involvement of parents and the community is encouraged to help the District to truly make a difference.
The Lone Star College System also serves the area.

Walden is the fastest growing area on Lake Conroe. The plans for Walden call for 5,190 homes which are to include estate homes, patio homes, townhouses, condos, single-family homes and a variety of commercial facilities including a country club, golf, racquet club, marina, and a yacht club.
